Ontario cannabis laws: what adults should know.

A calm orientation to age, retail, possession, travel, storage and driving. This is education, not legal advice.

Age and legal retail

Ontario’s legal age for cannabis is 19. Adults can purchase through the Ontario Cannabis Store or from authorized private retailers. Authorization and identification requirements should be confirmed through official sources and the retailer’s current information.

Possession and home cultivation

Federal law sets the public possession limit for adult-use cannabis, while provincial and municipal rules shape where cannabis can be used and how retail operates. Home cultivation has specific requirements and limits. Check current government guidance rather than relying on a summary.

Public use, vehicles and travel

Public consumption is restricted by provincial and municipal rules. Driving impaired is illegal. Cannabis must not be transported across the Canadian border, even where it is legal at the destination. Keep cannabis secured and follow current vehicle rules.
