Understanding THC
A careful guide to the cannabinoid most often discussed on a Canadian cannabis label.
Read the label as a whole
THC is short for delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, a cannabinoid found in cannabis. It is the cannabinoid most associated with intoxication, which is why its amount and the way it is presented on a package matter.
Canadian labels commonly show THC content before and after activation. Total THC is an estimate of the THC available if the product is used as intended; the relationship is different across formats.
Potency varies by product category and package. A higher number does not automatically mean a better fit for an adult or a more useful product. For edibles, onset can be delayed. Keep products away from children and do not drive after using cannabis.
- THC is one cannabinoid, not a complete description of a product.
- Label language and units differ by format.
- Potency is not a quality ranking.
- Health questions belong with a qualified health professional.
